The winter blahs are here, and this is a great time to think about gardening to elevate the spirit. This link talks about things you can grow that have mood boosting compounds. The first one listed: chard, can be grown in Florida year-round, and a few: sunflowers, Evening primrose, and St. Johns wort, have native varieties. A note on lavender – it can be very hard to grow successfully in humid Florida conditions. The better varieties for us are Spanish (not as fragrant) or French lavender. There is a cultivar, ‘Phenomenal’, that claims to do well in the deep south.
If you’d like to try some of the vegetables suggested, The Univ. of Florida has a good publication on when and how to vegetable garden in Florida. This is the link to that.
